DON LUIS DE TORRES Y DIAZ

Don Luis de Torres y Diaz was born in Guam about 1842. He is the son of Jose de Torres and Vicenta Palomo Diaz. He married Ana Palomo de Leon Guerrero and had six children: Josephine, Juan, Maria, Luis, Rita, and Carmen.

Don Luis came from a distinguished family with military roots and a tradition of civic service. He was a leading citizen and served as a judge and in the local government. He  was known as intelligent. His brother, Juan was also known as intelligent and reliable and also served as a judge and in the local government as auditor of the treasury.

Don Luis descended from Captain Joseph Miguel de Torres who was born about 1710 in Spain. He was assigned to Guam in the 1750s.  He brought his wife, Dominga Josepha Espinosa, born about 1715, and their five children to Guam from Spain. Both sons, Francisco Xavier born about 1737 and Juan Francisco Regis, born about 1739, served as Captains in the Spanish Infantry. The couple also had three daughters:  Maria Josepha, born about1741,  Luisa Lugarda born about 1743, and Maria Rosa, born about 1745.

Their son, Juan Francisco Regis de Torres remained on Guam and married a Chamorro woman. He died on Guam in 1803. His son, Luis de Torres also carried on the family tradition and became a Captain in the Spanish Infantry. Because he was a mestizo and carried Spanish blood, he could be commissioned an officer.  Like his descendants, he was extolled by foreign visitors as an informed observer.*

Luis de Torres y Cruz born about 1792 was Don Juan's grandfather and the son of Juan Francisco Regis de Torres.
